What is Take A Hike?

Take A Hike is a fun hiking event designed to raise awareness and funds for Canada's national, provincial, and municipal parks and historic sites. The event will be held on Parks Day weekend - July 20,21 1996 - and will help to link parks and sites across Canada.

Based on the principle that we must think globally and act locally, Take A Hike is nationally coordinated by the Canadian Parks Partnership with the support from the Federal Provincial Parks Council, Parks Canada, and a number of Canadian corporations. Implementation takes place at individual parks and historic sites across Canada.

Canada's parks and historic sites need our help. With shrinking government dollars, pressure to complete the system, and ever increasing public use of our parks and historic sites, the stresses are enormous. Government can no longer be solely responsible for their preservation, interpretation, and protection. Individual Canadians must get involved and become stewards for the protection of these special places.

That's the goal of Take A Hike... to involve Canadians in their parks and historic sites and to raise money to support enhancement projects in these special places. There are many projects in parks and historic sites that need our help. Through Take A Hike you can support projects that preserve wildlife habitat, carry out research, and further environmental and heritage education programs.
